Accelerated Courses Will Teach Basic Business Skills Including Finance, Computer, and Tax Preparation

The Accounting and Finance Team, led by Norv Wellsfry, identified four major concerns to address: (1) English as a second language students may not be familiar with basic business terminology; (2) Computers are extensively used in accounting, yet many courses don’t include computer skills; (3) Community College faculty may not be aware of accounting courses offered at other community colleges; and (4) There is a need to attract more women in advanced accounting courses.

The following curriculum development projects were completed and made available on the BESAC Web site:

  • Courses created at the College of San Mateo to educate tax preparation technicians were reviewed and approved as a model for other colleges
  • An accounting and business terminology listing with a Web-enabled database was developed;
  • Excel templates that demonstrate common accounting applications but do not require extensive knowledge of the program were created;
  • An extensive description of statewide degree and certificate programs available at California community colleges was produced;
A study of available course models was designed to help determine if a new accounting model for community colleges should be developed.
